Farewell (For Now) to Head Chef Marcelo Narvaez: A Leader, A Mentor, A Friend
After four transformative years as Head Chef of San Telmo – and more than a decade since he first stepped into the kitchen as a fresh-faced kitchenhand – our beloved Marcelo Narvaez is moving on. While he’s stepping away from the day-to-day grind of the pass, Marcelo will continue to play a vital role in the San Telmo Group from above, helping us grow and evolve with the same generosity and wisdom that have defined his leadership all along.
Marcelo’s journey is the kind that inspires chefs, front-of-house staff, and guests alike. He walked through San Telmo’s doors in 2014 with a resume in hand and no expectations, just a home-grown passion for food and a willingness to work hard. What followed was a steady rise built not on ego, but on humility, grit, and a deep love for the people and culture of hospitality. “I take pride in leaving pride aside,” he says; a sentiment that’s been at the heart of his leadership style. He’s not the kind of chef who shouts across the kitchen. Instead, he asks questions, shows patience, and teaches through encouragement.
Growing up in Cartagena, Colombia, Marcelo’s first lessons in hospitality came from his mother who taught him that feeding others meant caring for others. That spirit stayed with him. To Marcelo, it’s never been just about what’s on the plate or a fancy restaurant fitout. It’s about the entire experience: the smell of the charcoal, the feeling when your waiter nails the wine recommendation, the joy of a room full of people sharing good food.
As a chef, Marcelo is thoughtful. As a mentor, he’s empowering. He’s the kind of leader who sees the potential in people before they see it in themselves. It’s no surprise that his proudest achievement isn’t a dish or a dinner, but the team he’s built, and the space he’s created for others to grow.
Marcelo leaves behind a legacy of integrity, curiosity, and compassion, and a kitchen that’s in very good hands. Dylan Perry, our new Head Chef, has been learning under Marcelo for years, and we’re excited to see how he carries forward the spirit and standards that make San Telmo what it is today.
To Marcelo: thank you. For every plate, every service, every life you’ve touched in our kitchen and beyond. We are better for having worked beside you.
We’ll miss seeing you on the pass each day, but we know you’re never too far away
